It was about shoulder high and improved as the tide came in. I ended up staying in until after it got dark; determined to surf the reef itself and not just the Bay. In the event, I very nearly surfed straight into the blunt face of Patons rock itself. Bugger. Will wear a head-torch next time. Great fun for Golden Bay surf and apart from being soft to duck-dive it sometimes gave the impression of being a proper swell.
