Foto de Surf de Farewell Spit: 'Pilot Whales at Puponga' por Rob Davies
A pod of 80 or so Pilot Whales (like Killer whales, actually a very large kind of dolphin) start thrashing about as the tide reaches after they had been beached for several hours. About 200 volunteers worked all day to keep the whales cool. Staff from DOC, very familiar with the problem of whale beaching in Golden Bay, helped re-float the creatures as the tide came in. Most of the whales survived. Without help, beached whales sometimes drown if water reaches their breathing hole before they can turn off their sides.
