Once a decade, a big swell typhoon hit so strong that there's a 15 foot waves brake on the outer reef of Uchiumi. Is called Curren's point cause in 1992 Tom Carrol was the first who surfed it.

Jon It wasn't 1992 but 1991. And this is not Tom Carrol it's Tom Curren. That why they call it Curren's point... He went out there solo and was joined by Carrol and a young Slater who was freaked out he took 3 waves and came in. He was only 19 and already ripping but those were the biggest waves he had ever surfed up to that point.

FEATURE UPDATE: we now show red swell icons for 'open sea' swells that are travelling in an unfavourable direction for the surf break. In places, these swells may still wrap around coastlines and produce smaller waves at some breaks. They are also significant for windsurfers and other water users that tend to venture further off-shore.
